We live in a world where there is constant stimulation through technology, the internet, and social media – this extensive use of media affects both children and adolescents. Not only is this putting children and young people under more stress, but they are also developing fewer coping skills to enable them to manage these stressors.
As with adults, when children internalise stress it manifests physically, and can result in various health issues such as insomnia, chronic abdominal pain, headaches, depression, and anxiety. Yoga can help children and young people cope with stress, by teaching them the vital self-regulation skills to control emotions and stress from a young age.
Adopting such practices helps them to manage their wellbeing and mental health, and improve their resiliency to stress. Yogic practices help to connect the body to the mind, and teach you to be present in the moment, clearing your mind of overwhelming thoughts.
My children’s yoga classes are tailored for children aged 4 years’ and above, and can be offered in a group or individual setting. For young children, yoga is much more than just a physical activity – regular yoga practice can help children develop vital skills to help them deal with challenges in life.
Yoga can provide a short break for children, and provide them with a renewed focus, attention, and enthusiasm. Children that practice yoga not only gain an improved level of concentration, but an improved attention span. I incorporate mindfulness and breathing exercises into my classes, which help children to regulate their emotions and learn various coping mechanisms – which can be utilised when faced with stressful situations in their lives.
I am keen to support children in developing confidence and self-acceptance, and I often use stories and characters to engage with the children in our classes. The stories always contain a message of mindfulness within them, and use positive affirmation to help them feel good both internally and externally – encouraging positive body image is key to a healthy mindset in children.
As children grow, so do their needs and abilities. Yoga can be beneficial for teenagers in a variety of ways, by helping them to flourish mentally, emotionally, and physically. There is so much pressure on teenagers to look a certain way, and yoga can help them to improve their physical fitness without focusing on their appearance.
Teenagers balance a lot, from coping with school, learning to navigate social situations, their bodies changing, and their hormones, plus the added pressure today’s teenagers face from social media. Yoga can help teenagers to take time out for themselves, while developing powerful coping mechanisms to deal with stress and anxiety.
Puberty and peer pressure can place a lot of pressure on a teenager’s confidence, my classes aim to provide a regular practice of self-love, to help build confidence and a positive self-image around their identities and bodies.
